Monday 6th October - walks ***** – Sunrise Felixstowe and
Flatford– sunny and warm.
My 72nd Birhtday and what a brilliant day it was , a big thank you for all
the many best wishes from around the world:)
Walk 1 – Sunrise on Felixstowe Prom – pretty cloudy.
I can’t believe I woke this morning to become 72, where did all those
years go! Mag and I left home around 6,30 for a walk along the prom,
although it is always nice to be out early especially as it’s so quiet
and peaceful the sunrise was disappointing due to a bank of cloud on the
horizon, we only got a glimpse as we walked up the pram walk at 7.15! Then
back to bed for a cuppa, word games and sort out my pics, really lazy start
as we didn’t get up until nearly 11!!!
Walk 2 – Circuit around Flatford in wonderful Constable country – wall
to wall sunshine and warm :)
The weather has now improved with light wind, warm and wall to wall
sunshine so I quickly have breakfast in the garden and pack a picnic before
heading off on a mystery tour:) I decide to go to Flatford today as it’s
a shorter walk than starting from Dedham. We pass the National Park car
park and park in the one way Flatfort Road at the top of the hill that
leads down to the River Stour through the sheep field! We set off at 12.10
and amble down the hill to the tributary of the Stour where Mag spots our
first kingfisher:) It is stunning around here and it’s no surprise John
Constable chose to paint around here, we cross the river on Fen Bridge as
two canoeists paddle up to Dedham and we follow the willow lined river to
Flatford and spot a black bird with a bendy beak fly over which turns out
to be a glossy Ibis, the first we have ever seen in this country! We are
then entertained by a family of swans low flying as if walking on water,
just brilliant! The NT electric boats heads upriver as we approach the
famous Flatford bridge where we stop to feed the fish as the electric boat
returns to fill up with more passengers and a paddle boarder appears, the
perfect day for that! We continue down past the lock that leads to the mill
pool, our lunch seat is taken so we carry onto towards the big sluice but
turn left and follow the river to Judus Gap, a dead end where there is
another sluice which stops the salt water coming up from Manningtree, being
high tide the pool here is full of really big mullet that were not
interested inn our fish food! We watched them for ages before finding a
quiet grassy spot by the river for our picnic, brilliant it was too, a swan
glides past, a couple inn a canoe paddle past from Cattawade and we spot
another kingfisher and once again feed the fish, top relaxing lunch we had
too! Well rest we head back, feed the ducks including a bonkers swan who
chases them off! It was then down to Willy Lotts cottage famous for
Constables Hay wain painting, a quick spin round the NT shop and up the
lane and back to the van spotting a magpie picking bits of sheep resting
inn the shade. We were pleased to get back to the van after walking 3.5
miles making it 6 miles for the day but what a top day it was:)
